Black Pine
LOVE WON’T SAVE YOU HERE.
A terminally ill woman takes her husband to an abandoned campground for one last quiet trip, but when black sap from a dead pine begins infecting him, she must survive the night inside their tent while the woods uses his love, grief, and fear of losing her to keep her from ever leaving.
Maren and Owen arrive at Black Pine Campground hoping for silence, distance, and one final anniversary trip before Maren’s illness takes whatever is left of their life together. But the campground is deserted, the host site is abandoned, the emergency phone is dead, and something in the old pines seems to know they are there. After Owen touches black sap inside a split, dead tree, he begins to change. At first it is small: a dark crescent under his nail, strange hearing, a pull toward the woods. Then the campground starts using Maren’s voice to call him, and the dead or half-taken remains of previous campers appear at the edge of their site. When Maren discovers that salt can hold Owen back, their tent becomes a fragile refuge and a prison. The truck keys are clipped to Owen’s belt, the phones have no service, the salt line is thinning, and the thing inside him knows exactly how to use their marriage against her. To escape Black Pine, Maren must stop fighting the monster as if it is separate from the man she loves. She has to get close enough to Owen to take the keys, even if that means weaponizing the very intimacy she came here to avoid.
