Born into privilege in 19th-century London, Dr. Lucien Varnell inherited a legacy of surgeons and occult scholars. Yet, where his peers sought to prolong life, Varnell sought to perfect it — not through science, but through sensation.
He theorized that pleasure and death were twins — that in the instant of climax, the soul brushed eternity.
To prove it, he built The Velvet House of Pleasure, a hidden cabaret where desire was performed as ritual and pain as prayer. Patrons believed they paid for ecstasy; instead, they became vessels for his research.
Through unholy rites he called “Velvet Surgery,” Varnell captured that final instant of rapture and bound it into flesh, creating the immortal beings now known as the The Necromantics.
When the House burned, he vanished — some say consumed by his own flames, others that he ascended into his creations.
In truth, he lives still, a consciousness embedded within them, his heart preserved and beating in the dark — the Velvet Heart, the pulse that ties them all together.
